Medicare Advantage plans

About medicare advantage

COVERAGE

Medicare Advantage plans typically have a monthly premium in addition to the Medicare Part B premium. Out-of-pocket costs, such as copayments and deductibles, vary by plan. Some plans have no additional premium but may have higher out-of-pocket costs.

TYPES OF PLANS

  •  Health Maintenance Organization (HMO): Requires members to use a network of doctors and hospitals and often requires a referral from a primary care physician to see a specialist.
  • Preferred Provider Organization (PPO): Offers more flexibility in choosing healthcare providers and does not usually require referrals to see specialists.
  • Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS): Allows members to see any provider who agrees to the plan’s terms, with no network restrictions.
  • Special Needs Plans (SNPs): Tailored for individuals with specific conditions or characteristics, such as chronic illnesses or dual eligibility for Medicare and Medicaid.
  • Medical Savings Account (MSA): Combines a high-deductible health plan with a savings account to pay for medical expenses.
